Why Rain on a Window Feels Like Home

Of all the weather we animate, rain gets the most mail. Viewers describe the same thing in different words: the world outside gets loud, and somehow the room inside gets quieter.
That contrast — storm out there, shelter in here — is not an accident, and it isn't really about rain. It's a construction, built in layers, and once you know the layers you can hear them in real weather too.
Here's how a rain scene is actually made.
A window is an instrument
Rain against glass isn't one sound; it's a chord.
There's the low patter of the many — hundreds of small impacts averaging into something almost like static. There's the occasional heavy drop from the roof edge, arriving on no schedule. And there's the smeared run of water finding a path down the pane, which is less a sound than a change in the texture of the others.
We record and generate these as separate voices and mix them like a small choir. If any one of them is missing the ear notices immediately, without being able to say what's wrong.
The window doesn't just let you see the rain. It decides what the rain sounds like.
The glass itself sets the character. Old single-pane glass rings slightly — a faint high resonance that reads as thin, and it makes a room feel exposed. A thick cottage window muffles the high end, and the loss of those frequencies instantly makes the room feel warmer and more solid.
When we want an episode to feel especially sheltered, we thicken the glass in the mix. You can't see it. You can absolutely hear it.
Distance is the secret ingredient
The most important slider in our rain scenes is not volume. It's distance.
Thunder never comes closer than two hills away
A close thunderclap is an event, and events wake people up. Distant thunder does the opposite: it confirms that something large is happening somewhere else, which is the entire feeling of shelter.
Wind moves what you can see, not what you can hear
Trees bend in frame. The microphone is barely touched. If wind arrives at the listener directly, the room stops being a room and becomes a place that is being weathered.
Traffic is a swell, never an arrival
A passing car or cart is felt as a soft rise and fall in the low end. It never has a beginning. Anything with a clear beginning gets filed by the brain as something happening, and attention goes straight to it.
Keeping the dramatic things far away is what lets the near things — a spoon, a page, a purring cat — stay in charge of the evening.
Rain that keeps you alert
Close thunder. Wind hitting the mic. Sudden changes in intensity. Individual drops loud enough to count. Anything with a clear start and end.
Rain that lets you settle
Weather that stays far. Continuous intensity with slow drift. A dense average rather than countable events. Glass and walls audibly between you and it.
Room tone: the sound of nothing
Under everything sits the quietest layer: the sound of the room itself.
A faint wooden settle. The almost-inaudible breath of a stove. The particular dead-air quality of a small space with soft things in it. It sits so far down in the mix that in isolation it sounds like silence with a slight hiss.
If we mute it, the scene dies instantly. Everything else stays exactly the same, and the whole thing turns into a recording of rain rather than a place where it is raining. Most people can't say what changed; everyone feels it.
The things you don't consciously notice are doing the most work. That's not just a mixing principle — it's most of what makes a room feel like a room.
Why rain specifically
There's a fair question underneath all this: why does rain do this at all, when a recording of a busy café doesn't?
Our working answer, after making a lot of both, is that rain has two properties almost nothing else has. It is dense — so many small events per second that the brain gives up counting and hears one texture instead. And it is uneventful — no single drop ever means anything.
Density without significance is a very unusual combination, and it's exactly what attention needs in order to stop scanning. A café has the density, but every voice carries meaning and some part of you keeps listening for words. Rain never says anything. That's the whole gift.
What we're actually animating
People sometimes describe our rain episodes as relaxing, which is fine, but it isn't quite what we're aiming at.
What we're building is the experience of noticing — the small, ordinary pleasure of being inside while something large and indifferent happens outside, with enough quiet to register it. That feeling is available on any rainy night, in any room with a window, for free.
We just make a version you can put on when the real one isn't outside.
