He hauls the side door open and water sheets off the high wing; a screwdriver works the rusted hinge loose, and then he steps up into the dark, dusty hull. The mother and the girl follow, drifting apart between the round windows to look out at the rain-ringed lake.
Wet outer layers come off by the open door, and a knitted sleeve wipes a porthole clear until the far shore sharpens. Out of the bags come a carved wooden box, a folded blanket, a book; the little cast-iron stove is carried in, set level, and its pipe fitted up through the metal skin of the fuselage. When the fire catches, the riveted panels of the old plane fill slowly with copper-orange light, and a linen cloth is smoothed over the wooden sleeping platform.
At the counter, potatoes fall into neat slices and cubes, and the copper pot comes to a simmer — white fish and potato turning in a golden broth. It is ladled into speckled ceramic bowls at the little table, where the girl is already nodding over her spoon. Later the clouds part for one pale moonbeam across the water, the rain thins away, and the seaplane keeps its six round windows glowing orange — the only warm thing on the whole dark lake.
