A hand grips the wet railing while rain runs down the arm, the lake leaden and restless. The little house rides its two pontoons across the water toward a lonely cove below rust-and-amber birches; Anneli points the way from the deck, and Liisa draws the engine lever back until the shore rocks slide close. For a moment the two friends stand at the glass door, watching the rain grey out the whole lake. Then wet coats go on the hooks — one green, one brick-orange — and the rubber boots line up inside the door.
The kitchen counter turns white with flour. Round doughs take their spoonfuls of rice filling, a pot of rice porridge turns slowly on the stove, and nine braided buns are brushed with egg and scattered with pearl sugar before sliding into the little stove oven. In the blue pot, dark red berries climb to a low boil. Butter and egg are forked together into a bowl of golden munavoi, and thin strips of birch bark begin to cross and tighten into a small woven salt cellar.
Supper is laid under the birch-bark lantern in the glass-walled room: three plates of Karelian pies, five sugared pulla on a board, two woven salt cellars, steaming red glasses, a branch of orange leaves in the vase. Outside the panorama window the night rain thins to threads. Then the cream curtains are drawn, two beds are made up, and the little house stays the only light on the whole dark lake.
