Wind You Can Hear but Not Feel

31. júlí 2026 · 6 mín lestur

There is wind at the window. Your hair isn't moving.

The whole thing is in those two sentences. Air is doing something large and continuous a few centimetres away from you, and nothing whatsoever is happening to you. Of all the ingredients we use, this is the one that does the most work for the least effort — and it is entirely a sound, which is why the shelter feeling survives with your eyes shut.

Warmth only exists next to an edge

A warm room, on its own, is not a feeling. It is a temperature, and after twenty minutes you stop registering it entirely.

What you actually register is the boundary. Warmth becomes noticeable at the exact moment there is something cold on the other side of a wall, and wind is the cheapest way to put something on the other side of a wall. It costs no light, no screen time, no plot. It just keeps saying: out there, conditions; in here, none.

This is why a heated room in mild weather feels like nothing and the same room in a gale feels like an achievement. Nothing about the room changed.

We have built episodes that leaned on this so heavily that the interior is barely animated at all. A still frame, a lamp, and forty minutes of wind against glass will read as more sheltered than an elaborately drawn interior in silence. The room is not doing the work. The boundary is.

You don't feel the inside of a room. You feel the difference between its two sides, and wind is how a room announces it has two sides.

The same wind, twice

Stand outside in wind and it is not a sound at all. It is pressure, cold on the face, an interference in hearing rather than a thing being heard. Wind outdoors mostly arrives at your ears rather than into them.

Go inside and it becomes something else completely. The wall subtracts the top of the spectrum and everything that had edge is gone; what's left is low, rounded, and — crucially — coming from a specific direction, the direction of the window. Outside, wind is everywhere. Inside, wind has an address.

That's most of the trick, and it is why we never let a wind layer sit centred and wide in the mix. Wide wind reads as you are in it. Wind placed a little to one side, filtered, with a solid quiet everywhere else in the field, reads as it is over there and you are not in it.

Three winds, three feelings

Wind isn't one sound and the three main ones do not do the same job at all.

  1. The hum — air moving past a large surface

Low, broad, extremely stable. This is the one that means shelter, because it has no beginning and no end and changes only very slowly. It is the only wind we will run continuously for hours.

  2. The whistle — air forced through a gap

A specific pitch, produced by a specific hole. This is where it gets ambivalent: a whistle is a wall telling you exactly where it is imperfect. In small doses it's characterful. Sustained, it reads as a fault, and a fault is a thing you might have to deal with.

  3. The buffet — a gust arriving as a soft impact

A whole pane moving a fraction of a millimetre. This one has an onset, so it is an event, and events cost attention. We use them roughly once every few minutes, never in a rhythm, and always well below the level of anything else.

Most of our night episodes are ninety per cent hum, a scattering of buffets, and no whistle at all. The whistle is the seasoning you use once.

Wind that keeps you alert

Gusts that build in steps. A whistle that holds a pitch for minutes. Anything rattling. Wind that changes level noticeably, because a change means the weather is developing and developments have to be tracked.

Wind that lets you settle

A steady low hum with slow, aimless drift. Occasional soft pressure on the glass. Nothing loose anywhere in the frame. The clear sense that this has been going on for hours and will go on for hours more, at the same strength, without you.

The frame tells you the age of the building

The most underrated part of a wind mix isn't the wind. It's what the building does with it.

A modern sealed window gives you almost pure filtered hum and nothing else — clean, and slightly characterless. An older wooden frame adds a whole vocabulary: a faint creak as the timber takes the pressure, a soft knock where a pane sits loose in its putty, a barely audible hiss at one corner. None of it is loud enough to notice consciously, and all of it tells you the building is old, has stood through this many times before, and is currently absorbing the weather on your behalf.

Why our wind never becomes a storm

There is no episode of ours in which wind gets stronger over time. Not one, and this is deliberate to the point of being a rule.

The moment wind escalates, it stops describing a condition and starts telling a story — and stories have act three. We wrote about this at length in weather two hills away: once a change becomes directional, the listener starts tracking where it's heading, and tracking is exactly the thing we're trying to let people put down.

So our wind drifts. It gets slightly stronger and slightly weaker on no schedule and with no trend, and after ten or fifteen minutes most people stop monitoring it, which is the only outcome we're after. A room whose weather is not going anywhere is a room you can stop supervising — the same argument, from the sound side, as why small rooms feel safer.

Where this argument stops

All of this depends completely on the building you're sitting in, and we should say that plainly rather than at the end in small print.

Wind is reassuring when the wall is winning. In a flat with a window that doesn't close properly, in a house with a roof you've already had to think about, in a place where a strong night means something will need attention tomorrow, wind is not company. It is a status report, and a slightly unwelcome one. There is no mix and no episode that turns that around, and we're not going to pretend a nicely filtered hum can outvote your actual ceiling.

For everyone else, though, the offer is unusually cheap. You don't need weather at all. A room where you can hear something happening outside and feel nothing at all is the entire mechanism, and any sound that stays clearly beyond the glass will do it.

The wind can have the outside. That was always the arrangement.

The evening is warm here.
